If I had a reasonable chance of success, hell yes. I likely wouldn't try to save someone from drowning or from a building ledge, but getting someone out of traffic, or away from a nut with a weapon, yes. If I could act, and failed to act, I'd feel just as responsible for the death as if I deliberately killed that person.
Pets... probably not. At the least the risk would have to be a lot lower and the chance of success (and not being mauled by the rescuee) greater.
