An Old National Tradition...

ON THE ONE HAND...

... we Americans take it for granted that spaceflight to the moon, to other planets, even to the stars is but a matter of time- indeed, that it will happen in our own lifetimes- and that this is not merely a good thing but an obvious development of humanity.

ON THE OTHER HAND...

... a recent CNN/Gallup poll asked if the US should fund a manned space mission to Mars, and the result was 58% against, 40% in favor.

This is pure America for you. We want stuff, but we don't want to pay for it...

It's not just America. Many people want stuff, but want others to pay for it. Judging by tax burdens around the world, I'd say a large majority want things on someone else's dime.
