Some things just cheese me off.
A couple of days ago, the Houston Chronicle reported that the Harris County (the county Houston is in, the single largest population county in the USA at about 4 million people) Animal Shelter has only two vets.
And one of the vets refuses to spay or neuter any animals. He says the operation subjects him to unacceptable levels of stress.
Because of this, OVER 90% of the animals taken to the Harris Co. shelter have to be PUT TO SLEEP… because animals that aren’t spayed or neutered are ineligible for adoption.
And further, in October and November there were entire WEEKS when the Harris Co. shelter had NO ANIMALS TO ADOPT AT ALL.
The local version of the humane society has an adoption booth at Houston area malls at Christmastime; this is the first time in the history of the event that the Harris Co. shelter has NOT CONTRIBUTED A SINGLE ANIMAL FOR THE ADOPTION BOOTH.
The vet that refuses to de-sex the animals? He’s in no danger of losing his job. Since he keeps up on his PAPERWORK and has seniority in public service, he gets to stick around.
And poor, stupid, INNOCENT ANIMALS DIE that might otherwise have lived happy, comfortable lives.
If you live in the Houston area, do everything you can to AVOID taking an animal to the pound. For the time being, at least, the Harris Co. pound is an animal’s DEATH SENTENCE…
… and Harris County officials, and Houston city officials, don’t give a damn.
