(probably a lot more than five hundred words, but...)

On the subject of balky auto starters... )
On the worst-run convention I have ever seen first-hand in my life... )
I got home after an uneventful day of driving about 6 PM Sunday.
My opinions about this whole learning experience... )
For my part, the boss paid me about enough to cover my gas to and from his place and the labor costs on the starter repair. Aside from expenses I would have had anyway (that starter was going to die on me anyhow), that makes me whole for the weekend- no profit, but whole. The boss, on the other hand, has just had his budget crash for the remainder of the year, which means he's going to do all he can to get a refund out of Jacko'con.

I wish him luck, but I suspect no blood is forthcoming from that stone.

As for me, I have a couple of conventions left in the year which might be money-losers- a comic show in Memphis and a smallish anime con in Indianapolis (1000 miles one-way from home). I had hoped for more out of this trip... but I escaped with a more or less whole skin (aside from that damn starter), which is better than anyone else is coming out of it.

Bless my lucky stars... for a change.

Well, it's just a good thing I wasn't picked for a jury yesterday, because I just spent ten toss-and-turn hours more or less asleep, reaching the peak of the all too predictable post-con flu. (Cold. Whatever.)

Business, in short: $350 for tables, free crash space with Russ and [livejournal.com profile] starcat_jewel, a bit less than $100 for gas and food combined- call it $450 total expenses, and just under $600 total sales. Slightly more than half the total sales were T-shirts, particularly the Glomp, Eyes babydoll, Tofu and Fangirls shirts.

Rather than beginning a detailed chronological report which I might never finish, here are some "highlights".
How I Spent My Weekend, Prior to Monday Morning in Court and Monday Afternoon Mostly in Bed... )
All in all, I'm not permanently cheesed off at O-Chibi, but I am much less than impressed. The facility (the Hampton/Clarion conjoined hotels on Beltway 8 near Bush Intercontinental) was horrible, organization was nonexistent, but at least you and yours worked overtime to let people know I was upstairs, and you even herded a few folks up. I didn't hurt too badly by going, and I'll consider it next year... if Artist's Alley rules loosen enough to admit publishers, or if DR prices come down. $200/table or thereabouts is too much for the same rough attendance and sales as AggieCon, which has under $100/table DR prices.
