If you shop for books on Amazon….
Mar. 12th, 2005 01:47 pm(Note: This is a backdated post to clear out the old posts from an old blog that's turned into a spambot target, so I need to delete that blog ASAP. If you're not interested in my history, ignore.)
For God’s sake, read *each and every* review on a book BEFORE YOU BUY.
After seeing the author speak on BookTV (C-SPAN2), and interested in his generally libertarian line during his talk, I decided to order a copy of _The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History_.
IT REEKS. It’s poorly done political screed which just barely provides historical talking points, without direct cites, without much documentation, and with zero acknowledgement of opposing arguments. About half of the stuff in here I agree with, but there’s other garbage…
… Puritans routinely paid for all the land they took from the Indians? And never forced them off? BULLSHIT.
Strong religious control over a society produces freedom within it? BULLSHIT.
Blacks were better off under legislated segregation? BULLSHIT.
And there’s more, so much more.
Had I read -all- the reviews, I would have learned that Thomas E. Woods, Jr. Ph.D., the author, was a FOUNDER of the League of the South, which calls for eventual secession from the Union, an enforced-Christianity government, and Anglo-Celtic racial purity.
My God, I’ve bought a book written by a raving white supremacist.
I’VE PUT MONEY IN THE POCKET OF A WHITE SUPREMACIST.
And the endorsement blurb at the top of the front cover is from Ron Paul, the Republican US Congressman who votes the straight Libertarian party line in Congress.
I’m not just angry, I am *NAUSEATED.* This isn’t just a Dorothy Parker book, this is actually a book I’m considering BURNING lest it fall into the hands of others unawares.
I don’t want to keep this garbage, I SURE AS HELL don’t want it in a library, and I don’t wan’t to sell it.
I don’t allow myself much mad money for such purchases, and this is wasted dough.
Folks, read the reviews. Read ‘em ALL. Then buy, if you want to.
Or else you may make a blunder like I did.
