Day 6/25
Daily quota: 3,026/2,000
Goal: 12,342/50,000

Back in the black on the overall goals... which is astounding, since I really didn't want to write today. Today's work clunks instead of sings, but it's written and that's the point of NaNoWriMo, even out of season.

I think I'm good through the end of chapter 5, but at the moment I'm not quite sure where to go next. It's too late tonight to send chapter 4 to prereaders, though; I'll do that in the morning.

Contractors say they'll have the kitchen done by tomorrow. After that we get to go through the four HUGE boxes of pots and pans my cousin dug out of the cabinets and closets and figure out which get donated to charity somewhere.

Also tomorrow I make one last stab at getting the new computer straightened out. Wish me luck.

Brought to my notice by [livejournal.com profile] starcat_jewel, [livejournal.com profile] roxikat, and [livejournal.com profile] morphy... so far.

Go to Wikipedia and look up your birthday (excluding the year). List
three neat facts, two births and one death in your journal, including
the year.

Okay, January 12:

1592 - Titus Andronicus first staged at the Rose Theatre.
1964 - Rebels in Zanzibar begin a revolt and later proclaim a republic.
1966 - Batman the TV series debuts on ABC.

Born on this day:

1893 - Hermann Göring, Nazi official (d. 1946)
1893 - Alfred Rosenberg, Nazi official (d. 1946)

Died on this day:

1777 - Hugh Mercer, American Revolutionary War officer (mortally wounded in battle)

Until I found out about Goering, I thought my birthday was the most insignificant date out of the 365.25. It's still a frontrunner.

1. IF YOU DON'T LIKE HAVING YOUR STUFF YANKED, GET YOUR OWN WEBSITE. Really. DeviantArt is not your website. You don't get to make the rules. You don't get to enforce the rules. You're a guest here. Don't put stuff on DA you can't afford to lose, and if you're going to push the boundaries of DA's rules, get your own site. Hosting is cheap, cheap, cheap. If you can't afford that, find a friend with their own site and ask for space there. There are certain DA folks here who have standing offers for gallery space on WLP's website, for instance.

2. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RISK YOUR COPYRIGHTS, GET YOUR OWN WEBSITE. DeviantArt has to have a pretty broad damn license just to display your artwork on its site, because a copy of your work is generated EVERY TIME SOMEONE LOOKS AT IT. Every download is a copy. Without that "user agreement," DA is committing piracy on a grand scale with every picture of Princess Peach's panties you post. Besides, let's be honest- putting anything at all in any electronic format is putting a big sign on your back reading KICK ME, BEAT ME, PIRATE MY ARTWORK. Cheap web space is out there, folks- some places for $5 a month.

3. DA IS NOT A WEB COMIC HOSTING SERVICE. Trying to read a webcomic on DA is damn near impossible. Your artwork and your comic are mixed up in the gallery. Most people don't bother to make comic pages navigable backwards and forwards. I honestly cannot think of a worse archive system than DeviantArt for any webcomic. There are several free webcomic hosting services available, folks- or, again, you can get your own website. No excuse.

Now, if you just want to use DA to show off art to your friends and get to know other artists and creators, cool. That's what DA is for. But don't bitch when you try to use DA as if it were your own, or when you think DA is something it isn't. DA is not the entire Internet. There are other options. Next time DA pisses you off, instead of bitching, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

On to sorting through messages, again...

Day 7/25
Daily quota: 1,795/2,000
Goal: 14,137/50,000

Got done more than I thought I would, considering the annoying headache I have. Chapter Five may get split in twain, but it's definitely complete now, in first draft anyhow.

The work I'm doing is clumsy- I feel like, in literary terms, I'm swinging wide trying to fight my reflection in a giant cube of gelatin. I hope the edit cleans this up a LOT.

Tinkering with computer revealed that the CD drive and the DVD-R drive work all right... they're just UNGODLY SLOW. The problem was that none of the transfer disks would work. I eventually tried a different CD burning program, and that disk read... but the new machine doesn't have any zip-file utility. Will try again tomorrow.

While the contractors were putting in the cabinets and restoring the old kitchen countertop (they finish that up tomorrow, followed by painting the remaining old cabinets to match the new), I had to finally replace the fill valve in my toilet. This was every bit as much fun as you'd think it was, what with massive mineral deposits in the tank, a water valve that wouldn't quite shut all the way off, and a tank that doesn't quite drain all the way. (Until you pull the fill valve, that is, whereupon it drains a lot more than you'd think. Onto carpet.)

Hope the allergy headache goes away tomorrow. I need to build up a buffer so I can do some non-Safeharbor writing.
