I'm awaiting a phone call to find out if the co-op our landline phones are on offers DSL service way the hell out here.

Other broadband options are not in play. We're in the middle of a forest, so we can't get a line-of-sight on a satellite internet service without a VERY tall pole- forget that. There is no cable. The local electric co-op has given up on the (always delusional IMO) attempt to use electrical lines to carry broadband signals. It's telephony or nothing, and that means DSL.

What I'm considering now is whether or not it'll be worth the money, and I'd like your input.

Right now I have what is supposed to be a 56K dialup account. Right now it's clocking 28K, which is better than average. Quite often it dips to 16.8. However, it's only $16.50 per month.

The cheapest DSL promises 384K downstream (incoming?) and 128K upstream (outgoing) for $49.95 plus tax per month. That's IF it's available at all, and IF the DSL signal is clear. I'm told DSL decays rapidly according to distance from the switching terminus, which means that hypothetical 384K might be about as valid as my current hypothetical 56K.

Is DSL worth paying three times as much as I'm currently paying?
