Just before awaking, hence my ability to recall it:

The two of them looked up at a seagull soaring on the morning sea breeze. "You see that?" he said. "That's what we're fighting for. So long as you don't harm anyone else, you should fly happy and free."

Something spattered on the ground a few feet away. "Of course, if you start shitting on everybody else," he said, reaching into his pack for the Wrist Rocket, "then it's open season."

I don't think I could come up with a better parable for my political views just now.

Remember back in November, when I mentioned that the murderer of Dr. Tiller had essentially confessed to doing it- and that he was going to use the "he needed killin'" defense on the grounds that Tiller was going to kill uncounted unborn children?

Several of you, including [livejournal.com profile] filkertom and [livejournal.com profile] flemco, noticed this when it reappeared in the news a few days ago. And a lot of you, including [livejournal.com profile] dvandom, said that case law prohibited the defense.

Well, you were wrong.

Now, according to court procedure, technically this is not a not-guilty defense as such- it's an attempt to plead that the wrong charge has been brought, and that it should be brought down from Murder 1 (life imprisonment) to Voluntary Manslaughter (5-10 yrs.).

BUT...

... now, barring a ruling from an appellate court to block it, the jury is going to get to hear the "he needed killin'" defense.

And no matter what the procedure is, if the jury votes Not Guilty then the man walks out free and clear, and there will be nothing the law can do about it.

So yes, the threat of open season on MDs in Kansas (and elsewhere) is still very real indeed.

He finds this quote from history that echoes modern Republican dogma- if the modern dogma isn't just a repetition of the old stuff.

(Which I believe, and which I think shows that the old beliefs are well in force in the rump GOP.)

And then he says this about the apparent likely defeat in Massachusetts which will end the Democratic supermajority in the Senate after only four months:

But losing Kennedy's seat is a near-epic failure. If health reform fails, it will be because of a fatal combination of Democratic hubris and Democratic weakness. They just won the presidency and both Houses. And this is what they manage? Really, who wants to belong or support a party this goddamn useless?

So, Sullivan recognizes that one party is evil incarnate, the other totally useless.

But he doesn't draw the obvious conclusion from these two facts: we desperately need something else.
