OK- now I know what the injury is, and I know what's causing it.

In addition to the shoulder pain (which comes and goes), there's an occasional pain at the other end of the muscle, on the edge of the inside hinge of my left elbow. The whole muscle, end to end, gets tight, sore and a little swollen when it's hurting, so it's quite definitely a muscle strain, and almost certainly the tricep.

The cause is Dragon Quest Swords, a Wii game I got recently. I'm a very big fan of the Dragon Quest series of games, and the cheapness of this game was the main reason I snagged it last month at the same time as I got TurboTax for this year's income taxes.

Unfortunately, the game mechanic is to swing the Wii remote as you would a sword... fairly quickly and sharply, and with very careful accuracy. In order to get the strokes to register correctly, you pretty much have to hold the thing out forward at maximum extension with a grip that aggravates the touch of carpal tunnel I already had.

Anyway, today I experimented with right-hand play (I usually play left-hand)... and shoulder soreness in my right shoulder came within a couple of minutes of play. Soreness, I add, of the exact same kind as in the left hand when playing.

Obviously this game is causing a repetitive stress injury. I've never had tennis elbow before, so I don't know if this is anything like that.

What I do know, alas, is that I'm going to have to put that game disk back in its box and set it aside for a good long while. It's a shame- it's a fun little game, and the main reason it got bad reviews is that it's a SHORT game- only about twelve playing hours' worth of story, if I read correctly, most of it standard RPG hack-n-slash.

But I like it, and I hate being forcibly retired from it.

On the other hand, I would like to be able to get a full night's sleep, and I'd like to resume arm-related exercises on WiiFit, so this is necessary...
