... it's getting nearly impossible to keep up with the Internet on dialup.

Basically, my attempts at getting current at things have failed. I just don't have the bandwidth. I only go to FaceBook about once a week. Even Twitter, with its 140 char limit, is a chore to keep up to date on.

So I went back to the co-op phone company, the only non-dialup Internet option out here in the forest, and had another talk with them.

This time it was made clear to me:

(1) Yes, my address was quite definitely served by DSL;

(2) If it didn't work, I would NOT be on the hook for a one-year contract (but if it does, I would be).

(3) DSL prices would not be coming down anytime soon. At all. Period.

So, when I can start affording it (June at earliest), I'm probably going to end up signing up for their lowest end DSL account- $50/mth for 384kbs downstream, 128 kbs upstream.

Which, yes, is ten times the speed I currently have on my best days- IF it runs at full speed. With DSL, of course, those speeds are maximums, not guaranteed AT ALL.

And I will need to get hold of: a DSL modem supporting PPP over ATM, VPI set to 0, VCI set to 100, not bridging, compatible with Alcatel.

I'll also probably need a wireless node- it'll be nice for the Wii, but I don't know if they'll be able to get the DSL modem into my bedroom/office- and wireless cards for any computers that don't have them. It might be easier to just get a secondhand computer to run the wireless hub- or, more likely, buy a brand-new one and relegate the current box to semi-public use here in the house.

And then I'll have to change a bunch of emails on a bunch of accounts before I can drop my dialup account.

All this promises to be damn expensive. Not looking forward to it.

But dialup Internet is just becoming impossible anymore...
