Just turned on the Louisiana Tech v. Boise State game.
I like watching Boise State play not just because they're a pretty good team. I like watching because of their really freaky home field.
You see, Boise State's home turf isn't turf. It's Astroturf- artificial surface.
And it's not green. It's painted in the school colors- blue with a touch of orange.
And not just any blue, mind you, but a really freaky deep electric blue.
They call it the Smurf Turf, but Smurfs are a LOT lighter than this tone.
The color of the field is so funky that, when the cameras go to gameplay, all the colors on my screen go a bit wonky. It's like electronic eyes look at this stadium and yell, "I DISBELIEVE! I DISBELIEVE!"
And it's made all the more surreal by Boise State's apparent preference for night games at home. Or when ESPN shows replays late-late at night- this field is MADE for midnight football watching, for that state of mind when you're too damn tired to be awake, but don't want to go to bed yet.
I don't know of any college football team that's so visually interesting to watch. Or even close.
(Bear in mind, though, that I grew up watching TV baseball of the Houston Astros... in the early 1980s. It may have warped my mind. Look at THOSE uniforms... and be blinded...)
