... but when the White House website invites us to do it, I'll give it a shot, even if it is only an illusion.

There's a whole system for petitioning the President. Basically, you can start a petition yourself; it's then up to you to get the first 150 signatures before the White House allows visitors to the site to see it in their listings. If a petition gets 5,000 or more signatures (they claim), it then goes before the White House staff for review.

You have to sign up for an account at whitehouse.gov to sign, of course, but they let you opt-out of Re-elect Obama spam (they claim).

So, I signed on to sign a petition to strip "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. And then I signed several more. And then I decided to write my own:

Beginning in 2002 officials of the Bush Administration, including President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, conspired to violate international law and the human rights of prisoners in the War on Terror by ordering their torture and humiliation. They ordered their legal advisers and officials to provide legal coverage for their actions, and then destroyed evidence held by the CIA and other agencies when that legal coverage was reversed. Many of the leaders in this effort, including Bush and Cheney, express total lack of remorse and willingness to do it all over again. We, the undersigned, demand President Obama and Attorney General Holder fulfill their oaths of office, uphold the law, and prosecute all former Bush officials involved with the use of torture.

I understand if you don't want to sign on to the website, but if you're willing to risk it, I'd like you to sign that petition and pass the word on to your own friends.

I'm ESPECIALLY talking to those of you who are always saying I MUST support Obama, because otherwise the evil Republicans win. This is one of the BIGGEST reasons I currently CAN'T support him- and absolutely none of you have been able to defend him on this issue. If he shifts position on this, then maybe I'll reconsider. It's up to you to do your part to pressure him to do the right thing.

So please- sign the petition, pass the word on to others to sign it, and let's boost the signal for something more important than reopening the slaughterhouses for horses...

... yes, there's a petition for that, too. I didn't sign THAT one.

As soon as I posted my previous message, the petitions section of the White House website crashed.

It's back up now. Again, please go sign the petition telling Obama to prosecute Bush, Cheney, etc. for torture:
