1. Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
Yes. Do you have the guts to not insult participants with your first question?
2. Would you do meth if it was legalized?
No, nor would I experiment with any mind-altering substance, legal or not.
3. Abortion: for or against it?
Against abortion, in favor of abortion being legal. The question presumes that people who favor legal abortion want to kill as many embryos and fetuses as possible. Maybe Randy Milholland will make a video game for people like us- Uterus Invaders or something.
4. Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
No. The world will continue on regardless of American leadership, indeed without America at all, unless we blow up the planet. For that matter, the departure of humanity as a whole would be greeted by most other species with a sigh of relief.
5. Do you believe in the death penalty?
Yes, but with conditions. I do not believe the death penalty is a deterrent, because criminally minded people are not deterred by example. The only purpose for the death penalty is to take the criminal permanently and irrevocably out of circulation, where he or she cannot do further harm. I would eliminate the insanity plea for any murderer whose insanity is incurable- for example Charles Manson should not be wasting parole boards' time today. On the other hand, I would make the standard of guilt for death penalty cases beyond all doubt, not just beyond reasonable doubt; if there is even the shadow of a doubt, say due to circumstantial evidence, then the sentence should be life in prison at worst.
And finally, given how error-ridden and biased the current system is, I'd favor a ten-year moratorium on the death penalty and commuting all death centences to life without parole. It is better for guilty men to live than for the innocent to die.
6. Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
Yes. I'm also leaning towards legalizing all recreational drugs, but let's see what happens with marijuana first.
7. Are you for or against premarital sex?
For myself, I'm for it (not being married). For others, I believe it's not my business- or yours- to make that decision for them.
8. Do you believe in God?
I default to that due to my childhood upbringing, and to my inability to face the terror of eventual nonexistence. That said, if God is anything like James Dobson or Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson, I don't like him very much.
9. Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
I think marriage shouldn't be any business of the law in the first place; if government must butt in, then yes, it should be legal, as should polyamory, adult-adoption, and other means of forming families by consent.
10. Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
No. I think it's wrong that anyone could even formulate that sentence. If the law makes it illegal for people to come to the USA, then the law is wrong, not those who come.
11. A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
Not my decision to make, unless I have a twelve-year-old daughter. That decision should be made by the family involved, given every possible bit of information available with as little government interference as possible.
12. Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
Yes; further, I believe that those even younger should be allowed to drink alcohol under parental supervision.
13. Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Yes. We're wasting money and blood holding off the inevitable regional civil war.
14. Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
No. Individuals should be allowed to end their own lives. Assistance in this is legitimate, provided the individual is of sound and clear mind, and provided that the individual makes the final positive act to end his or her life. I also make a clear distinction between assisted suicide and euthanasia.
15. Do you believe in spanking children?
Yes, but only very young ones. Early on the only way to establish firm parental authority is the infliction of pain. Past the age of eight or so, though- and possibly earlier- spankings do nothing except inspire resentment.
16. Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
In a heartbeat. I'd even spring for the gasoline. A flag is only a piece of fabric; the pattern on it is at best a symbol of an abstraction with thousands of different aspects.
17. Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
Obama. McCain has shown himself a compulsive and transparent liar, pig-ignorant on anything that doesn't directly interest him, opportunist and hypocritical. Obama may or may not be a liar, but he's not ignorant, he pays attention to current issues, he stays calm under pressure, and he generally acts with integrity.
18. Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
No. Fuck 'em... and whoever came up with these questions, fuck you.
