The "balance" argument doesn't fly, for the same reason that a Democratic party "balanced" with Blue Dog Democrats fails at practically everything they attempt.
There needs to be some common ground that's universal throughout a political party. With the Democrats, the only common ground is, "We want power." The Greens, for all their flaws, currently have their common ground- just not in common with most voters.
