Poll: Most feel civil liberties not harmed by war on terror

Quoting:

While 39 percent of the 1,013 poll respondents said the Bush administration has gone too far, 34 percent said they believe the administration has been about right on the restrictions, according to the Opinion Research Corp. survey. Another 25 percent said the administration has not gone far enough.

Asked whether Bush has more power than any other U.S. president, 65 percent of poll respondents said no. Thirty-three percent said yes. Of those who said yes, a quarter said that was bad for the country.

... what is it going to TAKE for the other six out of ten Americans to open their eyes- nationwide martial law? Abolition of the 2008 election? Imprisonment of critics of the administration? (Never mind that allies of the administration have called for ALL of these steps at one point or another over the past five years...)

Wake up, America. Your civil liberties aren't merely in danger, they're being deliberately destroyed... and the time in which you can reverse the tide is rapidly vanishing...

Yeah, when I saw those numbers on the news this morning, my first reaction was, "Huh, so 60% of the people don't know what habeas corpus is?"

BTW, you gonna team up with the Louisiana Libertarian gubernatorial candidate? :)

Um, probably not. First, we're in different states. Second, I do NOT believe that extremism is EVER a virtue; Goldwater was WRONG.

Well, I was talking more along the lines of a WLP-based teamup. ;) (For anyone watching this who has no idea what I'm talking about, she's gained national attention for her breasts.)

Oh. Loretta Nall is the write-in Libertarian candidate in Alabama, not Louisiana.

Ah, misremembered the state. Sorry about that.

Drives me to drink. And, unlike W. C. Fields, I am not grateful.

Although I cannot comprehend their way of thinking, I know there are people who truly believe this is a remote issue that they do not have to think about -- they are law-abiding citizens with nothing to hide; such changes are only intended to catch people who've done something wrong; if the government catches you it is because you've done something wrong; if you're worried about this it must be because you have something to hide; etc.

As a member of a minority that has been targeted in the past, I know these thoughts to be false. As a close friend of a minority that is targeted right now, I know these thoughts to be false. As someone who paid attention to my history and civics lessons, I know these thoughts to be false.

But I don't know how to convince other people that these thoughts are false.

I pretty much rely on scathing insult. Sure, it doesn't change their mind, but I feel better, and occasionally someone witnessing the scenario will start thinking.

Random thoughts...

Data gathered with no accountability is inevitably misused. How can we be SURE that no phone calls have been tapped for political gain, for instance? No one watching the watchers and all that.

Misuses seem to take about 20-25 years on the rough average to come out. There's always some government program that gets outed and "of course, we don't do that NOW."

This is the first time in my 46-year life I've actually thought of the possibility of a President and a small group of his people taking over the government.
