So, while waiting before this weekend's AggieCon trip, I flipped channels past "How It's Made," possibly the most sleep-inducing show Discovery Network shows. At the moment I flipped to that channel, the show was describing the manufacture of female manniquins from foam.

Specifically, it showed a pile of cut-out foam-fabric pieces going into a roller... and coming out as a VERY female-shaped (but armless) figure.

And they blurred out its nipples.

That's right, Discovery blurred out the naughty bits of an inanimate object.

Granted, this isn't The Learning Channel, which at one time had a show about live, uncensored child birth... but really. Are tiny white foam teats so dangerous to the human mind that Discovery needs to protect us from the horror by making it look like a couple of tiny snowclouds are hovering over her chest? Will the sight of bare dummy boobs drive the viewers insane?

Give us credit for being mature enough to withstand the view of a bare tit now and again.

(Of course, I was more interested in the several hundred dollar price tag- as opposed to the two-grand figure for traditional plastic/fiberglass dummies. I'll show you pics of the shirt forms I made here for about ten bucks apiece when I get back from AggieCon...)

It probably has less to do with the Discovery channel thinking people can't handle an artificial nipple, and more to do with them just not wanting to get angry letters from the busybody mothers of "traumatized" children who accidentally saw it. Better to just sanitize everything a kid could possibly, see, ever — after all, it's Discovery, it's EDUCATIONAL, it should be safe for kids!

I heard they've also blurred out animals' bits on some farm and vet shows.

Yes, they acutally did blur out animal bits on Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs. Though what was going on was that they were getting a stallion's sperm using a special piece of equipment, so they blurred the horse's penis.

This isn't the Discovery Channel "protecting us from the horror of an uncensored artificial nipple". This is the Discovery Channel protecting itself from a multimillion-dollar lawsuit by some fundie idiot who sees Deep Pockets. Put the blame where it belongs.
