Debating? Feh.
Oct. 15th, 2008 11:57 pmSo, tonight was the final Presidential debate of 2008.
Tonight was also a new Mythbusters ep- featuring ninjas again.
Guess which one I watched. }:-{D
That said, I looked at the reax and clips of the debate afterwards. McCain was in full, "Get off my lawn, you damn Obama kid!" mode. When he wasn't angry, he was sneering- the worst sneer being his utter contempt for provisions in abortion law to protect the health of the mother. (And remember, in 2000, how he was pro legal abortion?)
Obama was pretty calm and collected, but had a couple of rough points, especially re: Joe the Plumber. Fortunately for Obama, snap polling shows that Joe the Plumber fell like a lead weight* in the view of the voting public.
The overall "who won" polls average roughly 60-30 Obama. I can believe it; I think, from the clips that got shown afterwards, that this was McCain's worst debate performance of all. Some of the hard-right bloggers and talking heads liked his ranting, attacking, and sneering, but nobody else did. The "undecided" focus groups CNN, MSNBC and FOX- yes, even FOX- all went from leaning McCain to either leaning or firmly in the Obama camp.
Barring an October surprise (and I think McCain's out of ammo), this is going to be a landslide Obama election. FiveThirtyEight, the most accurate predictor during the primaries, gives McCain only about a 5% chance of winning, with their estimate showing Obama winning thirty states (counting DC) with 364 electoral votes, McCain twenty-one states with 174 electoral votes. The only state on their list I disagree with is West Virginia, which I think will go for McCain, but that's only five electoral votes difference... and Indiana, with 11 votes, might yet go into the Obama camp.
Obama isn't my candidate, not after he voted for wiretap immunity and no accountability for Bush's crimes. He's the one I'll vote for, though, and I wholeheartedly encourage everyone who's sick and tired of Republican incompetence and intolerance to go to the polls and join in the triumphant sweeping out of Washington.
And if you're GOP... stay home. You can't win. You'll be lucky if your party can keep a fingernail grip on the filibuster in the Senate- the same filibuster that, four years ago, your people tried to abolish. The independents and politically homeless have spoken, and with one voice they're saying:
Get the hell off my lawn, you damn McCain kid.
