Today is January 25.

I bought a Wii Fit on January 26. Today was the thirty-first weigh-in.

The starting weight was 239.2 pounds.

Today's morning weight was 232.4 pounds.

So... not so hot. I'm well behind my goal of losing 22 pounds by February 26. (Two months is as far out as Wii Fit's system lets you set a goal. My actual, ultimate goal is to hit 190 pounds or less by A-Kon, or about

I've only missed one day of exercise in that time- that being day before yesterday, when the power was out most of the day. (I did turn the thing on and do a little bit of fiddling with it, but fifteen minutes of games and yoga doesn't count- and I was hurting too much after spending a lot of the day on my feet to do more.) My goal is to get the machine to register me as having burned between 400 and 700 calories per day; this usually involves a morning and an evening workout, both over an hour long (counting pauses between exercises).

I've not noticed much difference in things. I'm more hungry more often- and I'm trying to curtail my snacking and my general carb intake. When I started, a two-minute jog in place left me on the point of collapse; today, a four-minute jog in place was doable, but not pleasant (especially at the end). Maybe my endurance is improving- I don't know.

Beyond all doubt my favorite setting on Wii Fit in the future is going to be Free Step- which, as I've mentioned before, is walking more or less in place, stepping on and off the balance board, for up to half an hour. This can be done with the TV set to a different channel- so, start the beat, then switch over to the DVD player, watch an episode or two of anime while walking at 100 steps per minute (the maximum pace).

When I can I use arm weights along with the exercises (including Free Step); currently 1.5 pounds per wrist. I'm beginning to think about buying something a little heavier.

My main worry, at this point, is trips. Tomorrow I take my grandmother to Northwest Hospital and Medical Center in Houston, which will definitely cut one of the two workouts. Weekend after next my convention season begins with AggieCon, which means three days of no weigh-ins or workouts. (No, I'm NOT hauling the Wii with me to conventions.) I'm not a person given to routine; the odds of my exercising on my own without the Wii as guide and boredom-blocker are pretty low.

But I'll keep plugging at it as I can, until I'm certain the results will keep coming or until I'm certain they won't.

(Oh- and I made the first payment on the thing the other day. $280 more and I actually own it...)
