So, just a minute ago my desktop computer got attacked with the "XP Guard" malware- one of those lovely fake antivirus scams that claims you have more viruses than Strong Bad's 386, demands you pay for an upgrade, and refuses to be shut down or removed.

And this while I'm in the middle of updates to my ACTUAL antivirus software on that machine, too. I'm starting a scan anyway (with XP Guard trying to block me from getting AVG running), and I'll let you know what happens...

... oh, where did I get it? There are several possibilities, but I think the most likely are either TinyURL or PoliticalWire.com- since it was clicking on a shrunken URL from PWire on Twitter that started the attack.

Grr... this is one of the DISadvantages of DSL. On dialup I could usually shut these fuckers down BEFORE they loaded and began operating...

Deletion of a virus, virus scan, etc. later, followed by reboot...

... and then followed by replacing the deleted EXE file association- Windows forgot what to do with EXE files, so it kept asking "what do you want to open this up in?"

Desktop machine appears to be back to full functionality. Attempting malware scan (registry hacks found), rebooting after fix...

.. and all is well. WHEW.

And I only lost three hours to trying to get it fixed...

DELAY CONVICTED.

He could get anything from five years' probation to 99 years imprisonment.

Of course he'll appeal- and if it goes through the state courts, where not a single non-Republican remains, he might get the conviction overturned. The prosecutors need to get this into the federal appeals system, where there's at least a chance that it'll be upheld.

But even so... rejoice, for today in Texas, for a change, it wasn't okay if a Republican did it.
