It's getting dark outside.

The trees are keeping most of the wind (currently from the northeast) from hitting the surface around the house. The clouds are broken, plentiful, and moving very very fast. Right now I estimate surface winds at between 15 and 25 miles per hour here- about the same as a strong thunderstorm.

We always lose power in strong thunderstorms here. From this point on power could go out here at any time.

Wind predictions remain mixed: Ch. 2 in Houston estimates 40-60 for Polk County, as does the National Weather Services. 11 and 13 both predict hurricane force.

Ike's eye is strengthening, its maximum speeds creeping up... but its central pressure has risen in the past twenty-four hours, and the outer bands are breaking up almost as soon as they hit land, except for the ones actually hitting Galveston right around now. I think Ike is weakening overall- and believe me if Ike weakens faster than predicted nobody will be happier about it than me.

Back to watching TV, flashlight in pocket, and waiting for the lights to fail.
