Remember what I said just now about the evils of the extremist party, should they come back into power?

Well, I think at this point it's almost inevitable that Republicans will take at least the House of Representatives in November. That means a split Congress and a complete halt to any and all Democratic programs.

And, as unscrupulous lying opportunist Dick Morris exemplifies, it will probably mean a complete halt to the federal government entirely.

Such a defiant stand, in the face of withering criticism from the media, economists, and the Federal Reserve, can only be made by hardy souls. Indeed, such a stance by a Republican Congress will lead to exactly the same sort of government shutdown - when Obama vetoes the budget - as discredited the GOP in 1995-1996 and led to Clinton's re-election.

But history will not repeat itself. The Republicans will win this confrontation with the White House. Everybody in America knows that Obama has increased spending out of all proportion. Everyone knows that higher taxes would be devastating. And the Republicans must capitalize on these convictions so deeply held by the vast majority of voters to prevail in the coming deficit wars.

Morris isn't alone. Bachmann, both Peter and Steve King, John Cornyn, Eric Cantor, and probably John Boehner- and certainly the teabaggers like Rand Paul, Sharon Angle, Jim Morris, Mark Rubio, etc.- will all back a total shutdown of Washington. They would rather see the federal government destroyed than give up power, if they can manage it... and now they can.

So, instead of a month-long shutdown... a year-long shutdown, or more, since the fiscal year begins and ends October 1. Be prepared, if it's possible for anyone to be prepared. (I personally suspect the survivalists will be barking up the wrong tree, myself- guns and bunkers won't do any good when law and order on the state level survives, but the national economy collapses. Money, not self-reliance, will be the key to survival.)

Unfortunately, even if the Democrats were returned to power, they wouldn't do anything about the problem. They're simply too cowardly to take a united stand against the Republicans and their demagogues. The most they'll do is make empty or counterproductive gestures- as they did with the stimulus package, health care reform, and financial industry reform- to make it appear as if they did something.

We DESPERATELY need something else.

Money, not self-reliance....

Uhhh, there isn't any real money anymore. Every bill in your wallet is most likely "Fiat Money" (It's money because the Government says it is). Nowhere on modern currency is there any promise that the piece of paper with fancy engraving on it will be redeemed by the government with silver or gold.
All there is, is the statement that "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private."
Even the coins aren't worth anything near their face value with the exception of the penny; it's actually worth about 1/10 of a cent by weight (if it's the old style pure copper penny).
Myself, I plan on having Ammunition, and using it as an item of barter. Since I reload, it's relatively easy and cheap to make cartridges; and most gun owners don't have near enough ammunition to seriously defend themselves.
Neither money nor self-reliance is gonna see us through this; the only thing that will protect us will be our uniting against an opressive and distant tyranny...
Hey! Didn't we do this once before???

First, a copper penny would be worth substantially more than face value. Indeed, even the current zinc-nickel amalgam base penny costs the mint 2.7 cents per unit to make.

But that doesn't matter. If the dollar crashes, precious metals won't be far behind. I'm reminded of the many coin hoards being dug up in England, where Britons buried them after the Roman withdrawal... because nobody would take them in payment anymore. When truly disastrous times hit, the economy always devolves to barter, and only goods of intrinsic use will be exchangable.

Not that it matters, because if the federal government is shut down, the state governments will take over... partly. There will still be cops on the beat and soldiers protecting the country. Those states will continue using the fiat dollar, and thus the currency will retain some value.

And those same states will come down like an avalanche on survivalists and cooperative unions based on armed resistance.

One final note: we have had tyranny in the United States, many forms of it... but true tyranny has always been imposed on the local or state level. The federal government has never been able (or even much inclined) to crush the freedom and silence the voice of the whole nation. To the contrary, it has been the primary force, when there has been any force, working to tear the local versions of tyranny down. So, take a good look again at those people who want so desperately to shut the federal government down...
