As we've seen the past couple years, the Obama administration has been an abject failure at many things, but nowhere more obvious and surprising than their failure at communication and messaging- for example, in selling the START treaty to the public.

Obama's administration has been so bad, both at governance and at "leading" the mid-term campaign, that several campaign donors, including billionaire George Soros, are making plans to organize third-party liberal action groups in response to the conservative groups that flooded the airwaves in 2010- over Obama's often-stated disapproval.

Although Hillary Clinton, Russ Feingold, and Alan Grayson (to name some who have been asked) have absolutely ruled out a primary challenge to Obama for the 2012 election, it seems to me only a matter of time before a contender- and a very serious contender- rises from the Democratic ranks to challenge him.

Obama's record, if you ignore the blatant lies spread by Limbaugh and FOX News, is pre-emptive surrender to Republicans on every single issue- including, most recently, the Bush tax cuts, which the White House has already said they'll accept indefinite extensions on. Liberals are looking at what was done in the two years the Democrats had to work with, looking at how weak it is and how high a price the Democrats are paying for accomplishing practically nothing, and saying: this is Obama's fault. If we had a strong leader who wasn't so obsessed with "bipartisanship", we would have a public option, actual functioning financial industry regulation, immigration reform, a carbon tax... it's his fault, and he has to go.

It's highly unlikely that a primary challenger would take the nomination away from Obama, of course- so nobody but a committed liberal will do it. It's even more unlikely that anyone who ousts Obama from Democratic Party leadership would be able to win the general election afterwards. But more and more Obama's so-called "leadership" is becoming unacceptable not just to independent flakes like myself but to the general Democratic base. His remaining approval ratings stem not from his accomplishments or skill, but from simple blind team loyalty- "Yay any Democrat!" If Obama does not find a spine to defend SOMETHING- something, that is, besides torture, imprisonment without writ of habeas corpus, spying on American citizens, ordering the assassination of American citizens without evidence or oversight, and the corrupt puppet governments in Iraq and Afghanistan- he's going to be thrown out by his own people.

The man whose campaign was Yes We Can needs to realize that the flip side of that motto is And You Had Better.
