OK, the money I got this past weekend was from stuff put on consignment with IA, so technically WLP had no -direct- sales at this show. There wasn't room for displaying art portfolios, and barely room for any comics. The postcard prints got displayed, and got a couple comments, but got no sales. Everything was T-shirts and comics, and not terribly many of either.
Due to last-minute printing (which was mostly wasted due to a mishap involving an old-style oilcan), last-minute supply purchasing, and other issues, we only got into St. Louis four and a half hours before the Friday opening of the dealer's room. (Thus we missed the first Luke Ski concert; the second one, Sunday 2 PM, coincided with the final closure of the dealer's room and the mad rush to clear out.)
Gaming was mostly pay-for-play, although some pickup games were underway Saturday night in the con/party hotel. Friday night, after having slightly less than four hours' sleep on the road, I was so exhausted I decided to stay in the hotel room. Saturday night I wandered out from our hotel to the Holiday Inn the con used for party space... and bailed in about ten minutes. FAR too crowded, far too smoky, far too little at parties except booze and noise... oh, OH the noise. Throughout the hotel, there were only tiny pockets of space where the sound was low enough that I could make out words in the speech of people standing NEXT to me. At the pickup games of Fluxx and Super Munchkin I saw, I stood right next to players, watched their mouths move, and couldn't hear a goddamn thing they said.
In short, the fun quotient of the show was as close to zero as I've seen for a good long while.
Ate at White Castle for the first time. Feh. I like Krystal better, and Whataburger MUCH better. The only advantage WC/Krystal have is that they fry the onions along with the hamburger patties.
Oh, well... I helped out a friend, I came back with a couple hundred in cash, and I learned I won't do an Archon under my own power, at least not for a while... and not until the con moves back WEST of the Mississippi. I refuse to have WLP get involved again with the Illinois Revenue Service.
Next con OniCon, Houston, next weekend; probably the last for the year.
