... is, at least for me, 900 miles one-way, at least for now.
bar1scorpio has different ranges, but he generally does only artist alley tables with only the WLP projects he himself has worked on. For a fully stocked WLP booth, 900 driving miles from WLP HQ is the cut-off point.
Why 900 miles? That's roughly 15 hours of driving, not counting stops for gas, meals, supplies, or whatever. It's all I can do in one day.
So, what's in range? All of the following states:
* Texas
* Oklahoma
* Louisiana
* Mississippi
* Arkansas
* Alabama
* Missouri
Portions of the following states:
* Kansas
* Missouri
* Iowa
* Kentucky
* Tennessee
* Georgia
* Florida
* New Mexico
* Nebraska
And absolutely none of the following states:
* New York
* Illinois
* California (except, possibly, for Comicon International in San Diego)
Nor am I willing to deal with conventions in Canada or Mexico.
The following cities, working clockwise from west to east, represent the far extreme distance I'll travel for a convention (without fan subsidy of some sort):
El Paso, TX
Las Cruces, NM
Albuqerque, NM
Santa Fe, NM
Omaha, NE
Des Moines, IA
St. Louis, MO
Nashville, TN
Knoxville, TN
Greenville, SC
Augusta, GA
Jacksonville, FL
That's the driving range, if I'm paying my own way. (Furthermore, shows out on the end of that range will have to be a decent size; I'm not going to the edge for a literary sci-fi convention with a few hundred people, for instance. Gas and car repairs cost.)
Right now, I'm looking for conventions in the following periods:
* April 24-26
* June 12-14
* July 3-5 or 10-12 (not both) (Texas only)
* July 31 - August 2
* August 21-23
