Cynical idea #77109, something both despicable and yet perversely attractive:

Enlist every illegal immigrant currently in the USA in the armed forces. Send them to invade Iran to prevent the Ayatollahs from getting nukes. Everyone who survives becomes a full-fledged American citizen.

Three problems- oil crisis, Iranian nukes, and illegal immigration- solved at one shot. We get an Iranian government that doesn't jerk the world's gas chain, we stop religious lunatics (well, those not currently living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.) from getting Da Bomb, and we scare the living shit out of anyone thinking about crossing the border (illegally or not).

Of course, it would require those in power to be evil... utterly callous as to loss of life, human rights, the laws of nations...

... oh wait. They already are.

Bush might indeed be stupid enough to suggest that, but I guarantee no one else in power is. It would destroy the armed forces altogether.

OTOH, allowing illegals to voluntarily sign up for a 6-year hitch might actually work, with the promise that completing it successfully with an honorable discharge will make them naturalized citizens. This would solve the conscription problem and please the people who are complaining that "WE jumped thru all the hoops, why don't THEY have to?" Not to mention that most of those illegals would probably make better money in the service than they're making at wherever they're working...

For that matter, the first US soldier killed in the invasion of Iraq wasn't a citizen- he was a Honduran immigrant...

Too easy, all they would need to do is flunk out of boot camp to get an honorable discharge. To do that, all you need to be is illiterate (as I saw happen to one person in my boot camp unit, much to my dismay). Make the citizenship contingent upon completing the full extent of their first enlistment, with a provision for being released early due to being wounded in battle.

Note that I did say "completing it successfully with an honorable discharge", which I think addresses this point. If you flunk out of boot camp, you didn't complete your term successfully.

I had said something similar quite a while ago.

"Here's an idea! This'll put an end to the "WE DO JOBS NOBODY ELSE WILL!!" bullshit.. Make every person who comes over illegally, a citizen, but make them all within proper age range serve active military duty. Want that shit job with disproportionate pay now? There you go. Earn Uncle Sams respect the quick way if you must. If you've earned it, you wont hear a peep out of me. Not earning it and punching out kids once you snuck over is NOT respectable. You just laid anchors hoping you wont get tossed out if you've had "kids"."

Makes perfect sense to me to do it.
