So today the Democrats decided to lay a trap for the birthers- the large minority, if not majority, of Republicans who believe that Obama was not born in the USA and therefore is not eligible to be President.
2009 is the fiftieth anniversary of Hawaiian statehood. Among resolutions to commemorate National Soap-on-a-Rope Day or Remembering the Fallen Pullman Porters of America, or National Awareness Weeks Awareness Week, or whatever, the Democrats, led by Rep. Neil Abercrombie, Democrat of Hawaii, proposed a resolution in honor of Hawaii's big 5-0.
And in the resolution text- and in the speech proposing the resolution- it says both places that Hawaii is the birthplace of Barack Obama. That means, if a Republican votes against it, he or she is indirectly siding on the side of the birthers, i. e. that Obama was NOT born in Hawaii. On the other hand, if a Republican votes for it, they repudiate the birthers.
The resolution- like virtually all the resolutions of its sort- was to go to unrecorded voice vote, to be carried by acclimation... until a Republican objected for lack of quorum and blocked the bill.
Just try to guess which Republican House member, in particular, sat in a mostly empty House through a long speech just so the resolution could be shot down.
Go on, you'll never guess...
(yes, that's sarcasm)
